There are several things that you should know before you update your tuner. This will attempt to describe these things.
Device Updates:
First off, your tuner is a memory storage device. There are several different file types on the device that you must understand.

1: Firmware. This is the operating system of your tuner. Similar to Windows is to your computer. It determines how the menus are laid out and how to flash the different vehicles that the device is capable of flashing. The firmware update that you download has a unique file extension that your computer will not recognize. Download the file and simply save it to the computer. Do not attempt to open it, just save it to the computer (remember where you save it to). You will simply load that file onto the tuner using the X3/Livewire updater utility.

2: Tune Revision. This is the file that contains all of the information about the vehicles that it is going to flash. It determines the changes that will be made and is responsible for giving you your power gains. Again, this file has a unique file extension that your computer will not recognize. You must save this file and use the Updater utility to load it onto the tuner.

3: Drivers. Like any USB device, your computer must know how to talk to the device. The drivers contain information that your computer needs to determine how data will be transferred to the device. These drivers are located in the X3/Livewire updater utility. It is very important that you download and install that software before plugging your device into your computer. Once the software is installed and you plug in the device for the first time, you will see the “Found New Hardware Wizard” pop up. Simply click “Search Automatically” and your computer should find the drivers and install them. Important: You will need to do this once to install the firmware and once for the tune revision. Once they are installed, you will not have to do this again on that computer.

4: X3/Livewire Updater. This is the program that we use to update our devices. As stated earlier, the firmware and tune revision are simply files that need to be loaded to the tuner. This is the program that loads those files to the tuner. You must download and install this program before you can update anything on the device.
